Job Description
This position is part of the UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program (UC IPM) Communications Team, which works closely with other units in IPM such as the Urban and Community IPM Team, Pesticide Safety Team, and IT/Production Team. Working with UC ANR, industry, and agency experts, the Writer Editor develops and produces informational products about integrated pest management for pest management practitioners. These products are distributed in print or online and are prepared as part of a series or as stand-alone products.

Under the direction of the Content Development Supervisor, this position is responsible for compiling, writing, editing and coordinating pest management publications, webpages, online tools, and promotional materials. Educational product preparation involves composing the text; researching technical information in areas of pest control, crop production, and plant care; interviewing and consulting with researchers, Cooperative Extension advisors, and industry representatives; using your own expertise and knowledge to interrelate information; suggesting illustrations; coordinating with photographers or videographers; and may involve following the production process (including informal and formal peer review) through to publication.

This position is a three-year contract appointment that is 100% fixed with the possibility of extension.

Two positions are available.

Annual Salary:
Min: $58,500/year to Mid: $83,400/year

Key Responsibilities:
55% - Update databases and tools that support the Pest Management Guidelines and IPM website:

  • Using the Pest Management Guidelines, gather and organize the key pest management practices, including pesticides and images, for over forty crops to develop an online decision support tool. Coordinate the content review process. Work with the UC IPM Production Team to publish the tool online.
  • Review for accuracy and style the migration of existing Pest Management Guidelines content (text and images) to the content database.

    20% - Grant administration for integrated pest management research and demonstration grants:
  • Draft requests for proposals and coordinate marketing.
  • Coordinate the grant proposal review, including inviting proposal review committee members, handling proposal review meeting logistics such as travel.
  • Manage the grant report submission process.

    20% - Other duties as assigned depending on business needs and employee preference:
  • Accessibility updates to the website, product evaluation, marketing including social media, webinar hosting, instructional video production and closed captioning correction.

    5% - Participate in UC IPM Program Improvement:
  • Contribute to UC IPM Program planning and projects: review materials, make suggestions, promote products, and conduct analyses for UC IPM program efforts.
  • Participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) trainings and activities; make suggestions and provide the feedback necessary to ensure UC IPM is a fair and equitable program.

    Special Conditions of Employment:

    Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience /training.
  • Knowledge of biology.
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, editing, and proofreading documents for content appropriateness, logic, clarity, accuracy, grammar, syntax, and punctuation.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
  • Ability to understand and interpret research results and seek further information. Investigative skills to ask pertinent questions, absorb and discuss technical information in a broad range of subjects, and identify and review appropriate sources for specific information.
  • Project management, organizational skills, problem recognition, conflict prevention and resolution abilities, and experience prioritizing tasks and effectively working on multiple projects without loss of accuracy.
  • Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening, to effectively interact with a diversity of people with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. Skills to work effectively as part of a team in a collaborative manner to meet and exceed unit goals and provide input on the direction of the program.
  • Ability to provide good customer service and respond productively to clientele needs.
  • Proficiency operating Mac and/or PC computers, using MS Office.
  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles (e.g. technical information) appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.
  • Thorough critical thinking skills to evaluate scientific information for validity and applicability, detect data gaps, and resolve information conflicts. Skills to solve problems and make sound decisions. Ability to identify and analyze problems, and possible alternatives of accomplishing tasks.

    Preferred:
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Knowledge of plant biology and pest management sciences including biology and management of arthropod, weed, pathogen, and vertebrate pests, and pesticide nomenclature, classification, and toxicology.
  • Knowledge of California agriculture and natural resources.
  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production and web-based collaborative tools such as Microsoft Teams or Google Drive.
  • Knowledge of resources for information related to pests and pest management
  • Experience editing and writing how-to publications on technical subjects for technical and general public end user audiences.
  • Experience executing a social media strategy and developing engaging content for social media platforms.
  • Ability to respond constructively and openly to critiques and work with others to resolve conflicting viewpoints.
  • Ability to identify ways in which the work of UC IPM could better serve historically and presently underserved communities. Ability to build relationships and trust with new clientele from groups UC IPM has not traditionally served.
