Small Farms Lead Community Educator Positions (Community Education Specialist III)

Background. The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is expanding extension services for small to medium scale family farms, diversified farming systems, and historically underserved farmers. This program will build on the research and extension services currently offered by UC ANR Small Farms Advisors, assisting farmers through individual farm visits and technical assistance, training and educational materials offered in multiple languages, research on specialty crops and diversified farming systems, improving access to markets and financial assistance, and assisting farmers with regulatory compliance. Efforts will support unique, small-acreage crops such as subtropical fruits and culturally important vegetables and herbs, organic production systems, and alternative marketing efforts such as farmers markets, value-added products, and community-supported agriculture.

Positions being hired. We are hiring a Small Farms Lead Community Educator for Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. This position will join a team of UC ANR academics and staff expanding outreach and extension services to small-scale farms. The Lead Community Educator will work closely with the Small Farms Advisor in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties to coordinate county-based outreach and training efforts, as well as leading content development of educational materials with the statewide team in their identified area of expertise. The team will also partner with nonprofit partner organizations to increase farmer access to training, resources, and research-based information, with the goal of sustaining the economic and environmental viability of small-scale farms in California.

Language considerations. Multi-lingual outreach and educational materials for immigrant and refugee farmers is a priority of this program. Bilingual proficiency in either Spanish or Korean is required.
