Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Senior Rangeland Ecologist for The Department of Agriculture, Veterinary & Rangeland Sciences. This position's primary responsibility is assisting with field data collection, serving as field crew lead of experimental studies for multi-disciplinary rangeland ecology research projects and collection of data and samples from those studies. The position also has the responsibility of processing remote sensing data and building basic GIS projects in ArcGIS/QGIS and in R. Additional projects may include the development of state-and-transition models for Great Basin rangelands, investigation of the ecological dynamics associated with disturbance, landscape ecological modeling, targeted grazing, post-fire rehabilitation projects and riparian ecology and restoration research. This position reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) on the projects within the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary, and Rangeland Sciences (AVRS). The Senior Rangeland Ecologist delegates and supervises the work of the Rangeland Ecologist and student field technicians gathering data. In addition, this position assists with grant writing, experimental design, and statistical analysis of research data.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and two years of related work experience or a Master's Degree and one year of related work experience. Related experience: Rangeland ecology and management, environmental science, natural resource science, plant ecology, field sampling in remote locations, plant identification, transect knowledge and collection methods for both vegetation and soils, demonstrated ability with GIS and statistical software or a related area.

Certification and Licensure

Must have a valid Nevada State Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within required time period, in order to drive a State vehicle.

Schedule or Travel Requirements

This position requires working a variable work schedule with some nights or weekends based on research needs.

Travel within assigned areas.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with a current FAA Section 107 sUAS Commercial Pilot License, or the ability to obtain licensing with 30 days of hire are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with experience in R or Python programming languages are encouraged to apply.

Candidates with experience driving a 4WD vehicle with a manual transmission are encouraged to apply.

Grants-in-aid

The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate.
