DESCRIPTION
Mendocino College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track instructor to join our Agriculture department. The instructor coordinates agricultural and natural resources technology courses, programs, and facilities on a district-wide basis. The teaching assignment will be in horticulture, with primary instruction in local production agriculture (nursery, landscaping, viticulture, and small farm crops) and coordination of curricula in natural resources. This is a full-time, tenure track position offering a 10 month contract (August-May). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 164 instructional days and eleven (11) professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Compensation is dependent on education and experience.

Annual salary offered at $60,237-$86,420. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: With no monthly premium contribution from the faculty member, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date.

Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.

Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403(b) programs are available.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support student success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

Teaching

  • Instructs the full range of agriculture courses offered.
  • Conducts classes and finals as included in the schedule of classes;
  • Prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments;
  • Teaches class hours; evaluates students' performance based on quizzes, exams, projects, comprehensive finals and/or other assessments appropriate to the course outline;
  • Teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes;
  • Prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
  • Reports on time and prepared for classes;
  • Posts and maintains student contact hours;
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices; and
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports.
Department
  • Schedules department meetings;
  • Participates in program development, review, and revision;
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion;
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
  • Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline; and collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline.
  • Supervises all department facilities, including greenhouses, demonstration grounds and growing areas.
  • Coordinates maintenance and repairs in facility and equipment.
  • Manages hazardous materials use.
  • Develops and coordinates the monitoring of industry internships.
  • Serves as advisor to appropriate student clubs.
  • Serves as program contact for ongoing training and community education with agricultural organizations in Mendocino and Lake Counties.
Institution
  • Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes;
  • Serves on college committees;
  • Supervises support staff, including the agricultural technician, interns, and STNC workers.
  • Participates in the development of an annual budget for the discipline, submits purchase orders, maintains related records; participates in the completion of program review;
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance;
  • Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline;
  • Conducts a periodic inventory of equipment;
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges; and
  • Actively engages with program advisory committee.
Working Conditions
Indoor and outdoor environments; subject to adverse weather conditions; exposure to dust, noise from equipment operation, fertilizers, toxic chemicals used in spraying, and hazards from operating small farm equipment and machinery; climbing ladders; heavy lifting up to 75 pounds.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications

Master's in agriculture, agriculture science, or education with specialization in agriculture or a Bachelor's in any of the above and a Master's in agriculture business, natural resources, animal science, plant science, soil science, forestry, pomology, agriculture engineering, environmental horticulture, agronomy, enology, viticulture, or the equivalent.

Possess an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and a willingness to create safe and inclusive learning environments for all students.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of: Environmental horticulture; botany, irrigation practices, viticulture; pomology; small farm crops; agricultural business principles; principles of training and teaching; regional industry trends and practices; basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing maintenance and repair.

Ability to: Effectively instruct the full range of assigned courses using a variety of techniques and methods of delivery; evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; assess student academic progress; develop course schedules; stay current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities; evaluate faculty; maintain records; prepare reports; work effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations using sound judgment while interacting with students, faculty, staff and the community; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work variable locations and hours, including evenings and weekends.

Licenses: Possess or obtain appropriate pesticide certification (Qualified Applicator License, QAL or a Qualified Applicator certificate, QAC) within nine months of employment.
