Director of the Soil Research Cluster Laboratory (SRCL)

Penn State's Department of Ecosystem Science and Management seeks a Director for its Soil Research Cluster Laboratory, SRCL (https://ecosystems.psu.edu/about/facilities/srcl). The SRCL is a research facility that maintains several million dollars in analytical equipment, and performs testing and analyses in the areas of soil chemistry and biochemistry, soil fertility and nutrient cycling, soil physics, pedology, hydropedology, and various forms of agricultural and environmental testing. As a common use facility, the SRCL supports the research programs of faculty from multiple departments in the College of Agricultural Sciences, as well as other units across Penn State. The SRCL also offers classes and training to Penn State graduate and undergraduate students in the use of equipment and methods for soil analysis.

The Director of the SRCL will have a limited term multi year, non-tenure line Assistant Research Professor appointment in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management (ESM) with 50% research, 25% teaching, and 25% extension responsibilities. Key responsibilities for the research appointment will be to support the research programs of faculty who use the facility. However, the 9-month (36-week) structure of the Director's position will allow them to supplement their salary with extramural grants, either as lead PI, or as a co-PI and collaborator with faculty users of the facility.

The Director will teach one undergraduate and one graduate course per year. In addition, the Director will develop an extension component to the position that serves clientele in agriculture, industry, and/or state and federal regulatory agencies on issues such as soil contamination, restoration, or remediation.

Qualifications. Individuals must have a Ph.D. in Soil Sciences, Environmental/Analytical Chemistry, or related field of study. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Candidates should have experience running, maintaining, and managing instruments like those in the SRCL (https://ecosystems.psu.edu/about/facilities/srcl/laboratory-instruments), as well as experience with student mentoring or teaching.
