Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Assistant Professor, Urban Agriculture Extension Specialist with Extension. This position is located in Las Vegas, NV. This tenure track position will conduct applied research and outreach on growing food and/or medical plants in an urban environment. This position's primary role is to develop an Extension program focused on urban growing environments, including but not limited to greenhouses, controlled environments, hydroponics, urban/community gardens, and small containers for food or medical plant production. The faculty is expected to establish an externally funded, applied research and Extension program that addresses critical or emerging needs related to sustainable food and/or plant production in urban environments, and hot, dry ones in particular. This position would create linkages with the high-tech industry (manufacturing practices/technology), urban and peri-urban growers, urban planners/regulatory agencies, community organizations, and underserved audiences around the sustainable production of healthy food and medical plants. This faculty will plan, organize, develop, implement, and evaluate Extension educational programs, with a focus on Clark County and will provide leadership/delivery of educational programming related to indoor and urban agriculture. Urban farm types include those using outdoor fields or gardens, greenhouses, vertical/enclosed facilities, aquaculture, and hydroponics. The faculty will work in partnership with the Urban Agriculture Researcher on bio-tech components such as improving crop production, reducing fungal/pathogens, and facilitating the use of more environmentally and economically sustainable indoor and urban farming practices. The faculty will have overall responsibility for overseeing and managing the Research Center & Demonstration Orchard in North Las Vegas. The two Research and Extension positions in urban agriculture are part of an overall vision of the Urban Ag Research and Extension Center.

Required Qualifications

PhD in Horticulture, Agronomy or related field by time of appointment
Experience and/or knowledge in growing plants indoors by using various techniques to include hydroponic methods, soil-less growing techniques, grow lamps indoors, etc.
Basic knowledge of HVAC and environmental control system.
Understanding of plant nutrients and nutritional deficiencies and toxicities.
Demonstrated skill in in applied research and demonstration methodologies for urban agriculture development.
Demonstrated ability to work with volunteers, including training and curriculum management.
2+ years of related work experience in agribusiness, crop production, Cooperative Extension, or closely related fields.

Compensation Grade

Assistant Professor, 12-month, tenure track

Grants-in-aid
