Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for an Assistant / Associate Professor, Urban Agriculture with Extension. This position is located in Las Vegas, NV. This tenure track position will conduct applied research and outreach on growing food and/or medicinal plants in indoor and urban environments. The faculty's primary role is to develop a research program focusing on indoor and urban growing environments in deserts. These may include production systems using greenhouse, controlled environment, hydroponics, aquaponics, vertical or integrated agriculture, or other alternative indoor or urban-based methods of producing food, medicine, or other consumer goods. The faculty is expected to establish an externally-funded research program that addresses critical needs of growers and consumers of plant-based food, medicine, or other products. The successful candidate will establish and lead a research program that addresses the economic, environmental, biological or engineering needs of the indoor and urban agriculture industry with a view towards providing more sustainable production systems, including those that address the needs of underserved communities. This position will be a critical part of a research team that is charged with providing the knowledge and techniques to enhance indoor and urban agriculture sectors in Clark County, greater Nevada, and similar desert environments. The incumbent will be expected to attract extramural funding and establish a strong research program leading to publication. The faculty will also work in collaboration with the Urban Agriculture Extension Specialist on various projects of mutual interest. The two Research and Extension positions in urban agriculture are part of an overall vision of the Urban Ag Research and Extension Center.

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Horticulture, Plant Physiology or Pharmacology, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, or related field by time of appointment.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in growing plants indoors by using hydroponic methods, soil-less growing techniques, controlled environments, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC and environmental control system.
  • Understanding of plant physiology as affected by indoor environments, including biotic or abiotic stresses.
  • Experience with engineering aspects of indoor growing techniques and facilities, and their effects on plant response.


Compensation Grade

Assistant / Associate Professor, 12-month, tenure track

Grants-in-aid

The University is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
