Job Description:

The Department of Animal Science and Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, invite applications for a 9-month tenure-line faculty position in Data Science for Animal Systems. This is an 80% research and 20% teaching appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

We seek an outstanding scientist with expertise in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to large and multimodal data sets generated in animal production systems and/or experiments investigating animal physiology and disease. The successful candidate will conduct ground-breaking interdisciplinary research to develop precise, data-driven strategies for efficient and humane animal management using large datasets generated from technological innovations adopted by the dairy, poultry, swine, or other animal production industries. As an ICDS co-hire, the successful candidate will engage in computation and data-intensive research including development and/or application of innovative computational methods. This research will advance areas such as animal behavior monitoring to optimize welfare, environmental sustainability of animal production, application of bioinformatic and genomic tools to animal selection, or enhanced farm profitability through increased production efficiencies. The successful candidate will advise graduate students and teach an Animal Science course emphasizing the application of data sciences, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to animal production systems and biology. They will also be expected to engage in appropriate service and professional activities within and outside the Department and in their professional discipline.

Education and Experience: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Animal Science, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Data Science, or a closely related field and a strong record of academic outputs. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Applicants at the Assistant Professor level must have strong potential to obtain external research funding and teach courses that emphasize the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in real-world settings. Applicants at the Associate Professor level must have demonstrated ability to obtain external funding and a history of excellence in teaching in these areas. The faculty member will be expected to develop and maintain an active interdisciplinary research portfolio, work collaboratively on research proposals and projects, and leverage existing strengths at the University e.g., Information Sciences and Technology, Statistics, Engineering, the Institute for Energy and the Environment, and the Microbiome Center.
