Assistant Professor in Forage Extension

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Agronomy at Iowa State University is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in forage extension. We are looking for a candidate interested in applying their skills to study the opportunities and challenges of a sustainable and productive forage-livestock system in Iowa. This position is a 12-month appointment and has primary responsibilities in extension (at least 60%), with secondary responsibilities in research and teaching. The successful applicant must have written and verbal communication skills and other abilities necessary to develop a strong extension and teaching program. Relevant research areas in forage systems may include, but are not limited to, production, utilization, and economic issues related to adoption and use of pastures, annual and perennial forages in extended rotations with grain crops, and in hay, silage or grazing systems. The research and extension program should focus on issues that increase the profitability and sustainability of forage use by farmers. Teaching will include instruction of Forage Crop Management (AGRON 334) an undergraduate course taught one semester each year.

This position offers significant opportunities for collaboration and the incumbent will be expected to develop strong interdisciplinary research teams with faculty in agronomy, animal science and related departments on the ISU campus, allied research organizations such as USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agricultural and the Environment, private industry, commodity organizations, and other state and national partners.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop extension programming focused on issues important to farmers, including but not limited to environmental benefits, profitability and sustainability of forage use by farmers

  • Teach Forage Crop Management (AGRON 334), an undergraduate course taught one semester each year

  • Conduct research in areas relevant to forage systems including but not limited to production, utilization, sustainability and economic topics related to adoption and use of pastures, annual and perennial forages+


Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in agronomy, crop science, range science, or closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in extension, research and/or teaching related to forage-livestock systems

  • Experience in conducting field days, workshops, or talks to stakeholders such as forage/pasture growers, livestock producers, and agribusiness audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to publish research applicable to both the scientific community and outreach clientele

  • Evidence of collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork
